Learn what that weird dream you keep having means!

Learn what that weird dream you keep having means!

Everyone dreams. Sometimes our dreams are silly and far-fetched; other times, they're fearful or disturbing. Maybe you dream the same dream over and over again. Some people claim they can't remember their dreams.

Dreaming is important. We need to dream. Dreams come from our subconscious minds, and we can learn a lot about ourselves by analyzing them. They force us to see things that we do not want to deal with, and they can help us remember something we couldn't remember when awake. There is meaning to every dream, and even the most preposterous have meaning.

Some famous writers were inspired by dreams. Frankenstein came to author Mary Shelley in a dream. Robert Louis Stevenson dreamed of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde before ever writing them on paper. Sometimes, the stories we tell ourselves while we're sleeping can be psychic in nature. These are known as prophetic dreams.

Below, we'll discuss:

  1. Interpretations of the most common dreams.
  2. A list of symbols and what they might mean.
  3. Theories about why we dream, why we have recurring dreams, why some people don't dream, and whether dreams can predict the future.

Common Dreams and What They Mean

Dream Interpretation

falling

failing or literally losing control; common for those facing major problems or insecurity at work, in relationships, or somewhere else

flying

liberation; transcending old issues, finding new solutions (are you soaring high or struggling to get off the ground?)

teeth falling out

as symbols of strength, the loss of teeth can signal the loss of power; poor health, feelings of unattractiveness, fear of aging, general anxiety or fear of rejection; some believe this is a sign of sexual issues/impotence

public nudity

vulnerability, social anxiety, fear of being judged or analyzed; you may be unprepared for a project or decision or hiding something and afraid of being exposed; if people in your dream do not notice your nudity, maybe your fears are unfounded

taking a test

performance anxiety, fear of imperfection, fear of being evaluated by higher-ups

dying

a fear or desire to see something (job, relationship, pattern) end; the end of one phase and the beginning of another

being chased

avoiding problems, paranoia, running away from past (an opportunity to stop, turn around, and face issues)

infidelity/cheating

lack of trust, fear of losing relationship, insecurity

being late

lack of control, missed opportunities, trying to do too much

being pregnant

indicates a desire to nurture and give life to a new life, idea, creative project, or relationship

driving

the road is a representation of life: are you in the flow or stuck in traffic? If you are at the wheel, you are in control, and if someone else is driving, it could mean that you are being controlled by another person; pay attention to whom is driving

meeting a celebrity

the dreamer's need for recognition

water

water represents emotions: are you drowning, floating, or dying of thirst? clear water is a sign of good things to come; dark, polluted, or murky water may be a bad omen

house

houses represent the dreamer's mind, and different floors or rooms represent different ideas (is it tidy or neglected? are there hidden places?)

Interpretations for Common Dream Symbols

The meanings of common dream symbols vary from person to person. When interpreting your dream, keep in mind the setting, characters, and other symbols, as this will help you get a better understanding.

  • Aging: Could be fear of change or getting older. It could also symbolize forgiveness, letting go, wisdom, or being at peace.
  • Babies: Something new: news, a project, happiness, responsibilities.
  • Birth: A new project, the start of something new.
  • Cats: Aloofness, independence, vanity, beauty; could mean "a catty person."
  • Childhood Home: Old beliefs, parents' ideas, and beliefs. Outdated or old fashioned ideas about family.
  • Children: Innocence, happiness, being carefree and playful. It could also mean immaturity or that you are being naïve about something.
  • Dogs: Loyalty, friendship, trust, and companionship.
  • Finding Valuables / Money: Success and prosperity within reach.
  • Hair: Cutting hair symbolizes a loss of power. Bleaching hair may represent vanity. Losing hair can mean fear of aging, self-consciousness, worry about appearances.
  • Ladders and Stairs: Walking upstairs means success. Walking downstairs means failure. A spiraling staircase can mean your life is "spiraling out of control."
  • Being Lost: Not feeling in control, feelings of helplessness. Losing valuables/money could mean an unexpected gain.
  • New House: New phase in life, new beginnings, happy endings.
  • School: A common dream for adults is being back in school, missing a class, being late, or failing a test, and then not being able to graduate. If you have had this dream you may be feeling like you are failing at something or are living below your potential.
  • Snakes: Watch out for backstabbers and false friends.
  • Strangers: Strangers in our dreams represent ourselves. They could be a part of our personalities we are not consciously aware of, or could be a hidden talent that we haven't yet discovered.

Note: These meanings are very general. Use this guide but also take note of the feelings you are experiencing during your dream, and when you wake up. You should also take into consideration what is going on in your life. For example, the dream meaning of being pregnant would not apply if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.

Dreaming permits each and every one of us to be quietly and safely insane every night of our lives.

— William Dement

Why Do We Dream?

Scientists have been studying dreams for decades now, but we still aren't sure how and why we dream. Here are a few of the theories:

  1. They help our brains learn, sort, evaluate, and process everything that happens to us during the waking hours. There is some research to support the theory that dreams are part of how we learn and form memories. Studies show that people who are actively learning during the day have more dreams; one study found that students learning a language had more dream activity than non-students.
  2. They help us deal with our emotions. Especially if we haven't had time to process the emotion during the day, some believe that our brains use the downtime to sort things out.
  3. They have no meaning and serve no function whatsoever. Until we understand dreams more, we might take into consideration the idea that they're just a meaningless byproduct of sleep.

A dream which is not interpreted is like a letter which is not read.

— The Talmud

Why Do I Keep Having the Same Dream Over and Over Again?

A recurring dream, one that keeps coming back to you, can be disturbing. You may have it a few times a month or more frequently. It may be accompanied by a sense of urgency or a negative feeling.

Scroll to Continue

Read More From Exemplore

Think about what is going on in your life. Have you had a trauma, or are you in a transitional period? Maybe there is something big and upsetting that you cannot bring yourself to think about during your waking hours.

A recurring dream will not stop until you face whatever it is that is happening in your life. You know deep down that whatever is happening to cause them needs to be addressed. It may help to start keeping a journal. Before going to bed, write down events of the day. When you wake up, record your dream. You may see a pattern.

Once you know and deal with the cause, you will no longer have the recurring dream.

But What If I Don't Dream?

You dream every night. People who say they don't just can't remember. As the day goes on, you remember less and less, too. If you want to remember your dreams, you must actively pursue them. Before you fall asleep, make a conscious effort to remember when you wake up. Be sure to keep a pad of paper and a pen on your nightstand. The minute you wake up, write your dream down. Even if you don't remember the first time, don't give up. You will eventually start remembering.

Studies show that we dream more during the REM stage of sleep, and if you wake up during or just after this stage, dreams are more easily remembered. So if you're an extremely sound sleeper, your dreams may fade by the morning, while a light sleeper may awaken many times during the night and therefore have more access to fresher dreams.

Dreams say what they mean, but they don't say it in daytime language.

— Gail Godwin

Can Dreams Really Predict the Future?

Throughout history, people have claimed to have seen visions or prophecies while sleeping. There is no scientific evidence to back this up; however, a lot of people have claimed that it has happened to them. Dreams that are prophetic usually lack symbols and seem very real to the dreamer.

Some famous prophetic dreams might surprise you:

  • Albert Einstein's theory of relativity was formed in a dream.
  • Abraham Lincoln dreamed of his assassination hours before it happened.
  • Julius Caesar's wife Calpurnia had a dream the night before he died that he would get stabbed by a friend.
  • Joan of Arc had a prophetic dream about her death.
  • In the early 20th century, people dreamed of the Titanic sinking and canceled their trips.
  • Many people dreamed of the 9/11 terrorist attacks before they happened.

Most of us also experience déjà vu at one time or another. Déjà vu is the experience of being absolutely sure that one has experienced or witnessed a situation that they are currently in. It could be the person dreamed of the event before it took place.

Once you start understanding your dreams, things in life will begin to make more sense. You will begin to gain more self-knowledge and start confronting your feelings. As you tap into your subconscious mind, you may discover talents, fears, and desires you never knew you had.

A dream is a microscope through which we look at the hidden occurrences in our soul.

Christina Odisho on October 10, 2018:

I've had dreams about bears a few times. One time, I don't exactly remember what was happening but I remember there being a bear, and I'd woken up for the first time in my life as a result of a nightmare, sweating and breathing heavily. I couldn't go back to sleep for an hour or so after that until sleep finally took over. Another time, I was in the middle of some kind of land surrounded by grass and hills and a few trees. I started running, for no reason at first.. but I'd suddenly developed this need to run faster and as a turned around, there I found a bear chasing after me. There was quite a distance between us but nevertheless, I knew it was only a matter of time before it caught up. I made my way up a hill, it wasn't long before I noticed this building I could only assume was a zoo of some sort for bears. I desperately ran as fast as I could towards it and entered through this gate. I don't know why, but my dad was there accompanied by a guy once again, I could only assume worked there because of the uniform he was wearing. I remember turning around to see if the bear was still after me or went some other way. My heart stopped when I noticed it entering through the gate I'd come through and I began to have a mild panic attack. What scared me the most was the fact that my own dad and the worker weren't doing anything to help me. They just continued their discussion as though nothing was wrong. I went behind a railing with the bear on the opposite side. It was as though it was playing with me because it never actually attacked, it just kept following me as if to make it seem like it was going to. It acted more as a human than it did a bear. I started hyperventilating when no one would help me. I climbed the railing when the bear caught my leg. I was able to escape but I was never able to catch my breath... Of course, all amazing dreams must come to an end (note the sarcasm) even if they aren't complete. Smh

So last night I had a dream about me at the white shield school. I walked in a pep rally and I saw my friend Abby and the pep rally was done so I went with the students to the high school side. I saw Noah with Abby and they look like they were together. So we went into a computer class and they both sit right next to each other. I was across from them. She said thank you because Noah help her get her into the chair. They were talking I don't know what they were talking about. My heart ached. He was talking to a different girl. I was jealous. I said well I'm gonna see if I have classes. I went out of the classroom. Head to the office. I saw a lady and walk toward her.I asked her so I'm visiting and do I need to be in class. She said oh you can go into that game out in the hallway. So I went and theirs chairs, table, a TV small one, so I sit down then all of a sudden two little boys were in front of me playing games. The scene changed and I was in the gym with the little boys still playing their game on TV. I turned my head and I saw a lot of high school students coming into the gym and heading to lunch I'm guessing. Their I saw...I saw them walking side by side. So I got up and for a sudden Noah stopped walking. So did Abby. I walked past them and as I walking past them he looked at me and Noah stared at the ground. I didn't care. Walked out of the gym into the lobby and at the right corner they got a new store filled with instruments. I walked in saw the flute and I picked it up then someone came in the store. It was the owner. He said to do you know how to do the flute. I said no. He said well....let's hear it. I blow into the flute and I hear a little bit of sound. I tried again and accidentally spit on the flute I looked up and saw the owner looked at the ground with a sad face. Hopefully nobody saw that other then the owner of the store. Then at the corner of my eye I saw Abby and Noah half way walking out the gym. Then all of a sudden everything starts to go blurry and this bright light was in front of me. Covering the scene. Then I woke up. I haven't dreamed of Noah in 6 years. Why now? Is it because I'm visiting Bismark north Dakota and Noah lives their.

My dream was weird. So it was cotillion, and this boy (my old crush who liked me back from elementary school) walked up to me and my friend who were talking, so I told my friend that I would be a minute. The boy and I were talking for a long time, then I kissed him. After that, we both smiled and did it again. The problem was that his father was watching, and so I walked around a pillar, where I could still here them. They talked for a while, so I quickly gave the boy an apology, and my friend and I walked away. The boy then yelled to me that it is okay, so i turned around and smiled. Later that night, around midnight, I texted him to tell his father that I am sorry for doing that. That was when I woke up.

What does this mean?

When I was 9 yrs old I used to have dreams of boulders chasing me down a hill I was told that I would talk in a weird voice don't remember, next day but felt drained? It happened to me once during the day when I wasn't asleep? Doctors said not night tremors. They were baffled, then the dreams just stopped. The dreams coincided with a huge rock slide in western Canada. Talked to a priest about it and he looked at me like he was scared, then he blessed me, no problems since. Weird but true.

well when i was younger, the night after Christmas for three years i had a dream that i woke up in my bed then went to my parents room, but there were skeletons in there place in there clothes. then my older brother @ cousin were next to me. we ran down stairs and stopped at the bathroom. suddenly 2 skeletons came out @ dragged my brother in. my cousin (who's a girl) screamed. the door closed

then a big casket slid from under the door, i screamed "Ashley! don't!" but she opened it. and a little tornado of bones appeared, i knew it was my bro he chased me while i saw the other 2 skeletons chase my cousin in to the garage. he pined me and said "i'm going to eat you, your meat!" but i said "but my brother has way more meat than i do!" the skeleton bro contemplated this then ran upstairs. i remember felling this big séance of relief. then i woke up.

for years i thought i had this dream because i watched "the nightmare before Christmas" the night after Christmas, but i'd had it three years in a row and now i'm thinking differently.

what do you think it means? (p.s. sorry it's long :)

Hi Shannon,

I had dreams like that about Brad Pitt ( when he was younger!). Gosh I wish those dreams come true.

It could be that you really have a crush on him, or because he is so famous, you may be craving attention.

There is a very slight chance your dream may be telling you the future. It really happens sometimes but it's really, really, really rare. If you suspect it's one of those dreams, there would not be a whole lot of symbols in your dream. The dream would feel very real, take place in a realistic setting and upon waking up you would feel a bit shaken up.

I hope this helps and I truly hope your dream comes true. :)

Hi Anchove,

Without knowing a lot of details about your husband's stay in jail, I can only assume that you are worried about him or because he is gone, he may seem dead to you. I'm sorry to hear that he is in jail and hope things get better for you both.

Hi Nikki,

The fact that your dream is recurring means you need to pay attention and take action. What's going on in your boyfriend's life? Is he involved in any dangerous activities or anything that causes you to worry excessively about him? Are you having relationship problems? You need to take a closer look at what's happening in your relationship. To shoot and kill someone can signify killing a certain aspect about that person. Perhaps there is a habit or a part of your boyfriend that you don't like and want to 'get rid' of. There are various possibilities to interpretations. Hope this helped a bit. Good luck!

It has Indivisual apartments and two of my friends are in the one. In the ajacent apartment a lady that is turnIng into a zombie is singing in this really good voice. I keep hitting her since she's turning into a zombie but she keeps singing. Finally she dies and I go into my friends apartment place and I walk up the stairs and when I walk back down there's everyone Ik from school there. And then there's a party and then I'm in the middle of a highway that is chaos but I'm alone. And then the dream ends. I keep having this dream but the singing zombie is really freaky! Hi Sharon,

Does your son play sports at all? Sports symbolize competitiveness, fun and aggression. It would help you to find out who he is playing lacrosse with and who the other people in his dreams are.

Hi Love,

Two things can be happening here: Either you are secretly crushing over this guy or he has a crush on you and you can sense it. This is actually not at all uncommon! We can pick up on other people's feelings. During the day we are too busy to notice but then our subconscious mind tells us while we dream. It's happened to me too!

Hi Tiffany!

Thanks for commenting. The pregnancy dreams are really common for women. Don't worry though, it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get pregnant in HS so don't think that! You are at an age where there is a lot of new and exciting changes and pregnancy symbolizes changes, projects and new things to come. The miscarraige only symbolizes your fears. I really hope this helps you figure your dreams out.

Hi Stacey,

So sorry for the late response. It's very odd that you and your husband are having the same dream. The old, dark and abandoned home may signify some kind of loss or fear. Kitchens represent family life. I suspect you are both longing for something more (the house seen through the window gave me that clue), I am assuming the dream may mean financial worries but not 100% sure since I don't know what's going on in your life. I hope this helps some.

Tiffany on February 18, 2012:

Hello, I keep having dreams that I am pregnant. I've never had sex(only 14 years old). But each dream is a little bit different. I've had 3 dreams. The first one, back in November, I had this dream and I was in a house with all my aunts from my fathers side + my father, my mom and her mother and my moms sisters. I think I did give birth to that baby but I'm not sure, I don't remember. The second dream, in December, I was pregnant, hugely pregnant by the way, and I was still in highschool. But no body was as mean as you might exspect them to be to a pregnant teen. I do believe I gave birth to this baby as well. Not sure though. And both of these dreams I haven't seen the baby or known who the father is. The last dream is a bit unusual. This last dream I just had last week. I was still in school and my friends knew, and I wasn't that far along(well, I wasn't showing yet at least). I was in my normal house that I live in real life when I told my I was pregnant in my dream. She was actually really calm about it, which was a surprise for me. After that I went to the bathroom and I started bleeding. It was a large amount of blood(reminded me of a horror film :/ And I could hear it pouring out. Pretty gruesome..). And I think I had a miscarage in this dream. But I never got to find out what because my mom woke me up (in real life). I'm not really sure what this means. And I'm really scared frim the dreams. But I didn't realize I was having so many if these dreams until the last and I woke up thinking "...whoa.." I don't know what they mean. Can you help me?

Stacey on February 17, 2012:

Hi there.

Me and my husband have been have the exact same recurring dream.

in the dream we are alone (individually, not together) in a large house that is old, dark and abandoned. the house is mostly empty apart from little bits here and there. But the kitchen has really distinctive characteristics and items about it.

what does that mean?

Also, the end of my dream is different to his. i walk into a room with only 3 walls, i walk into a garden area and look over a fence at another house in the distance.

Amy DeMarco (author) from Chicago on February 15, 2012:

Hi Susan,

My father died years ago and I have the same kinds of dreams about him as you do about your dad. It's very common.

Old houses in dreams are common. The hiding places represent things you are learning about yourself.

Hi Mealony,

It's hard to say without having more details but it sounds like it could be two things: you miss them or perhaps feel guilty for cutting them out of your lives. If they are negative people please don't take that to mean you should talk to them again. You may harbor a lot of unresolved feelings about these people in your subconscious.

SUSANJK from Florida on February 14, 2012:

I have been dreaming about an old house with lots of hiding places that I discover and am very familiar with. Or about my dad who died when I was a teenager. I dream that he is still alive and in a nursing home and upset because I have not been to see him.

Mealony on February 13, 2012:

Hi I was wondering why I keep dreaming about my in-laws constantly? They are all different dreams but I am sick of dreaming about them!!! I have not seen them in months and won't being seeing them anytime soon. My partner and I are still together but he and I have chosen to disconnect ourselves with them because they were a negative influence in our life. I was just wondering if you had some insight to this? Thankyou.

Brown Kimberlybee from Navarre, Florida on February 13, 2012:

yeah, i figured out the dream. friday i was in a wreck with a 16 wheeler. i figured the whole dream out. it was as clear as day. thanx

Hi Whitney,

It is very normal to have nightmares when you're pregnant. I'm so sorry to hear this is affecting you so much. Becoming a mom is a huge change and not only that but you are going to be responsible for another's life. Anxiety is to be expected and it's usually a subconscious feeling. Often the anxiety plays out in dreams causing you to have nightmares. I hope this explanation helps. If you haven't already, tell your doctor about you are having nightmares. Perhaps she or he can help ease your mind.

All my best to you!

whitney21 on February 12, 2012:

I've never really had any dreams until I have gotten pregnant. Ever since then though, I've always had scary dreams and weird dreams, which, I was told was normal, that many pregnant women experience that. I'll be 28weeks on Tuesday, and for the past few weeks, it doesn't matter whether my dream are scary, or happy. I ALWAYS have the feeling of "needing to be aware and scared", or just always afraid, when there is no reason to be. I feel like I can't be content in my dreams anymore. And last night, I was afraid to even fall back to sleep. I barely ever remember my dreams anymore, but I always remember that scared or afraid feeling. I don't understand why this happens. Why am I afraid in my dreams, even when there is nothing to be afraid of?

Amy DeMarco (author) from Chicago on February 12, 2012:

Hi Sarah!

Thanks for commenting. I read your dream. It seems like you don't feel like you 'fit in' with your family. Dreams can be very literal and I think that's going on here. Are you the black sheep of your family or do you feel left out of a lot of things? That's what I'm getting.

Sarah :) on February 11, 2012:

Since I was a kid I have always had these dreams about things being too big or too little, like for instance, I would be trying to put pages in a book and the pages would get really big or really small, and they wouldn't fit in the book. Or I would have a dream about my whole family standing in a circle and we are passing a water melon around to each other but once it got to me it would be too heavy to hold or too small for me too see and hold, and it would start to make me feel sick and weird and sweaty and I also would wake up sick weird and sweaty aswell, and I wouldn't wanna go back to sleep not because The dream was scary, but because it was frustrating and the way it made me feel. Can u help me?

Amy DeMarco (author) from Chicago on February 11, 2012:

That is pretty weird. If you don't mind me saying this, I think it might be good that you aren't in this relationship anymore. The dream sounds like it might be trying to tell you that.

Brown Kimberlybee from Navarre, Florida on February 08, 2012:

i think they were too faced.lol, in my dream they were being too faced i sensed.but he was sleep on an old nasty couch alone. he looked at me but never spoke. but i was like feeling weird.

Hi Brown Kimberlybee,

That dream sounds so disturbing! When you break up with someone, it can feel like a death. Perhaps that is why you dreamed they were living under a graveyard. Did you get along with your in-laws, were you afraid of them or are they vindictive people? At the end of the dream, you ran out of there fast, which is a great sign!!

Thanks for sharing your dream! I truly love hearing other people's dreams! It's so interesting!

Brown Kimberlybee from Navarre, Florida on February 08, 2012:

Snakes symbolize enemies and back stabbers so it's interesting that the pimples were on your husbands back and that you were picking them off. Are you worried about your husband? Does he have enemies? It's a very curious dream and is definitely trying to tell you something.

Mira on January 27, 2012:

I had a dream that I was squeezing something out of my husband's back (pimple) and I saw that it was a pimple but it turned into a snake!!!! I was shocked but not really so scared. I told him in the dream what it had turned into and he was not very concerned. Then, a second one came out. What does this mean? Oh, also, they coming to me but not trying to bite me. They just wanted to be on me but I kept trying to get them off of me.

Amy DeMarco (author) from Chicago on January 26, 2012:

Hi Sam,

Thats a pretty unusual dream. The fact that you were racing him makes me wonder if you feel like your competing with this person in some way.

Sam93 on January 25, 2012:

Hi I had a question I had a dream that I was on the beach with someone that I liked and then for some reason we wanted to race each other so I got a head start and sprinted off usually he'll beat me cause he's really fast lol but I was way ahead of him and I felt like I could run forever. This dream felt so real and I wa shocked to see I'd beaten him.

Your insecure in your relationship or may have some trust issues. I suggest having a talk with your bf.

what does it mean when u dream of ur boyfriend sleeping with one of ur friends and he dont even care in the dream?

Amy DeMarco (author) from Chicago on November 08, 2011:

Hi emily,

It sounds to me like you are feeling helpless and trapped. I don't know what's going on in your life but you may want to analyze some things that are happening in your life. I also suggest you read other articles and books on dreams. Good luck :)

emily on November 06, 2011:

what does it mean when I'm dreaming that I am in this house with parents and 3 babies and the house sets on fire and they leave the babies in the house to die and I can't move to save them and then I'm standing outside the house listening to the babies screaming inside

Amy DeMarco (author) from Chicago on November 06, 2011:

Can you give me more detail? Is the fox running from something or after something? What are you feeling when the dream is taking place? Are you feeling a sense of urgency or dread?

Red is a color of passion, fear and violence. My guess is that the fox is you and you're running from something or trying to get away from something that scares you. Could be a person, job or situation. If you don't want to face it or are ashamed then that's why you may be seeing a fox instead of seeing yourself. Foxes are symbols for cleverness, sly and sneakiness or silliness. Could also be a pun ( foxy woman) or refer to the term "crazy like a fox." if the dream is recurring it most likely has something to do with an issue you aren't addressing. I hope this makes sense.

Jackolanter on November 06, 2011:

What does it mean if I dream about a red fox running throw the forest? And I have been dreaming this for about 2 weeks?

I enjoyed your hub. I LOVE dreams and have joined hubpages myself just to write about them. I'm writing under the health->mental health-> dreams and dreaming topic. I'm wondering if I should join you over here as well! I appreciated your Gail Godwin quote- so true!

Fluffy77 from Enterprise, OR on May 06, 2011:

Very useful and informative hub, thanks for this info. here. You should check out my stories based on my real dreams, this is great therapy too.

I feel that if you write down, and then examine your dreams, you can sometimes get a better understanding of what's going on in your life. I don't know how accurate dreams are on predicting the future, but I like that portion of this article.

All in all, this was very interesting, and unique.
